Got New wood CEDAR to Burn... very nice What's your favorite??
We just went out and got some CEDAR wood to burn some signs for family... My father wants one saying "If ya can't be civil...... BE GONE!!" lol.. I thought it was a very funny one... I have burned many types of wood and am seeing a lot more sites on pyrography on google and yahoo's search engine.. We are in the process of getting a site up on wood burning/pyrography and were looking to sell some Basic signs such as the ones we have already made ex.. Childs name w/ train in middle or other object.. Or round wood with (this was for my cousin) "we don't rent pigs" LOL and have a cactus, bull's skull, and cowboy had burned around it... just some basic stuff and try to re-coup our fees through the pyrography.... We also thought the new wood types would be an asset, as we are from Arkansas and own or have family that own a lot of land to get GOOD wood from rather than the mass produced wood you can get from stores such as hobby lobby and such.. If you would like a sign made let us know and we will send you some samples and get a price (WE ARE VERY CHEAP AS IT IS JUST A HOBBY)... and would like to get some customers out there that can spread the word about our burning... Has anyone done this before?? we have done a few swap meets/flea market type settings and done Okay through them, but the experience is pretty limited... Mainly family and a few friends is our audience right now, but would like to increase that to serve not just the US but all over the world... Let me know what you think please and if you have tried anything productive.. On-line store, web-site, flea market, newspaper ad, EBAY??, anything or just a comment.... THANKS again

Within our research we have found many different "claims" to the beginning of "pyrography". All in all we have found that wood burning/pyrography in general is different in every persons eyes and you must "let your mood guide you" while working with wood. When you really think about it, you are bringing nature back together with humans... In today's time we are custom to the "high-tech" times and seem to forget about nature: the forest on a sunny day with the wind blowing through the leaves and laying on the flowing grass right at the end of the tallest trees shadows or those rainy days where you used to sit underneath the "big" oak (or similar) tree and wish the rain away.... Just those "good OLD" times that tend to slip our memories, but HERE it is finally a true HOBBY that can bring us back to NATURE.... GIVE IT A TRY!!!

There are many different account of how pyrography/woodburning started and we have found many different upon research below is what one reader sent up and only wanted to be known as Marty S. from Kansas... (FYI: if you send us information/comments/questions please let us know if we can post it and who to give credit to...) This is pretty interesting and goes along with a lot of the research we have done
The Pyro (fire) Graphics (expression with lines) art form is limited only by that which can be burnt. As one of the very first art forms invented, primitive man combined fire and wood to make drawings by rubbing a charred stick against a textured surface, or by chewing a charred branch and mixing it with salvia to make black paint. These forms are evidenced in the preserved cave galleries where primitive man first displayed his art on walls
In the 1600's and 1700's Europeans would heat small metal rods, or "pokers" in a fire to make drawings. Since these rods would soon cool off and could no longer be used to burn, artists would have several metal rods in the fire to be able to continuously burn, which is the origin of the saying: "having more than one iron in the fire". Since then many devices have been made to make fire writings, but modern artists most commonly use an electric metal or wire tipped pen to burn designs onto wood, paper, leather, bone or gourds. Many skills are involved: designing, drawing, painting, carving, wood work and finishing, even computer skills are used for graphic art design and pattern making.
My Fire Art is done mostly on wood, usually, Italian Poplar, Birch, Basswood or Myrtlewood plaques, plates, spoons and boxes. Various methods are used to color some items, the most typical being oil based colored pencils which work well on wood. Stained and colored items are sealed with a satin finish coat for color preservation. Other items are left natural, or rubbed with a food grade oil in the case of cooking utensils. Those items which have been stained or colorized are decorative only, and should not be used for cooking.
